In a surprising turn of events, Oregon State University has named wide receivers coach and passing coordinator Kefense Hynson as the interim head coach of the Beavers football program following the departure of Jonathan Smith. Hynson, who previously served as the team’s defensive coordinator, will assume the reins of the program for the remainder of the 2023 season.
After weeks of speculation that head coach Smith was being considered for another job, Smith’s sudden departure to Michigan State as their next head coach comes as a shock, amidst a challenging season for the Beavers, who have struggled to replicate their success from 2022 when they won 10 games and clinched a spot in the Pac-12 championship game.

Michigan State previous head coach, Mel Tucker will be replaced by Johnathan Smith 44. Mel was fired on September 27 after admitting to sexual immoralities on an April 2022 phone call with a rape survivor and activist.
“As I start this next chapter of my coaching career, I want to first thank all the players, coaches and colleagues I have worked with in the last 6 years, ” Smith wrote in a post on Instagram. “I will cherish the memories and friendship. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the people of OSU/Corvallis for your support.
When I first arrived as a freshman college student, I had no idea the opportunities this community would provide for me and my family. The collective impact you have made makes it impossible for me to thank everyone individually, but I am forever greatful.” Thou the terms of Smith’s contract has not yet been released, Michigan state board will approve of his contract on its meeting on December 15, 2023.
Hynson brings a wealth of coaching experience and a deep understanding of the Oregon State football program to his new role. He has served as the Beavers’ defensive coordinator since 2018, playing a pivotal role in the team’s defensive resurgence during his tenure.
