Nigerian Islamic cleric, Bello Muhammed Tahir, has called on nursing mothers to avoid breastfeeding in public, describing the act as inappropriate and urging husbands to take a stand against it.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page over the weekend, the Kogi-based cleric expressed his disapproval, saying:
“Do not breastfeed in public. Your nudity before marriage remains your nudity after marriage, except for your husband who is permitted to see everything. Even among fellow women, avoid exposing your breast while breastfeeding.”
He further criticized what he described as a growing trend of mothers being “carefree” about breastfeeding openly:
“Some nursing mothers are too casual about this. They expose their breasts for everyone to see, all in the name of feeding a child. Every responsible husband should frown at this. Nursing mothers, be guided. Allahumma bārik.”
His statement has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing on modesty concerns, while others defended public breastfeeding as a natural and necessary act.
