Veteran Actor, RMD: “Being Called A Legend Feels Like A Scam”

Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has shared why he’s not a fan of being referred to as a legend.

Speaking on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, the 63-year-old actor explained that while he respects the legendary status of others, he doesn’t consider himself one.

“I think the whole ‘legend’ thing is a scam,” RMD said. “I have my own legends—like Uncle Pete [Edochie] and Uncle Olu Jacobs. These are our ancestors, our true legends.”

RMD noted that he’s been watching Olu Jacobs since his days as the face of Ribena commercials. To him, being called a legend feels like being pushed toward retirement.

“When people call me a legend, it feels like they’re saying I should step aside. Like I’m being moved into the neighborhood of retirees or those nearing retirement. I don’t subscribe to that.”

Born in Delta State, RMD began his acting career in 1982 and has since become one of the most celebrated figures in Nigerian entertainment. Despite his decades-long career and influence, he says he still feels very much active and evolving.

“I’m still in the game. I’m not done yet,” he said.

For RMD, the title legend is more than just a compliment—it’s a heavy label he’s not ready to wear.
