Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of staging a false image of peace while continuing military assaults, despite Kremlin claims of an Easter ceasefire.
In a statement shared Sunday on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Zelenskyy referenced a report from Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi that documented sustained Russian attacks well after the supposed truce began.
“By 6:00 a.m. today, there were already 59 Russian shelling incidents and five ground assaults across multiple frontline directions,” Zelenskyy wrote.
The remarks came just a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary ceasefire for Easter, claiming all military activity would be paused from 6:00 p.m. Saturday through Monday morning.
However, Zelenskyy said the reality on the ground told a different story. Between the start of the announced truce and Sunday morning, Russian forces carried out 387 shelling attacks, launched 19 ground assaults, and deployed 290 drones, he reported.
He also noted continued aggression in Russia’s own Kursk region, where artillery and drone strikes were launched from Russian territory.
“The Russian army is trying to create the illusion of a ceasefire,” Zelenskyy stated. “But in several areas, isolated attacks and attempts to advance continue. It’s clear this so-called truce is not being upheld.”
The Ukrainian president reiterated Kyiv’s willingness to honor a real and lasting truce, adding that Ukraine’s proposal to extend a genuine ceasefire for 30 days remains on the table.
“We are prepared to act based on the actual situation on the ground,” Zelenskyy concluded.
