A 13-year-old Grade 7 student, Mbali Mlaba, has tragically taken her own life following reports of persistent bullying at Vulindlela Primary School in Harrismith, located in the Thabo Mofutsanyane District of Free State, South Africa.

According to the provincial Department of Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, Mbali had allegedly been harassed by a classmate who accused her of cheating during a class test. The bullying, which reportedly included physical assault, had continued over several months.

“Mbali’s mother discovered a note explaining the reasons behind her heartbreaking decision,” said Ndaba. “In the letter, she expressed fear of a specific classmate who had bullied and assaulted her in the previous term. She had even asked to be transferred to another school.”

The Free State Department of Education has condemned the incident and reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on bullying.

“We take all allegations of bullying very seriously,” Ndaba said. “This tragic incident underscores the urgent need to foster a school culture grounded in empathy, kindness, and mutual respect. We are actively supporting affected learners and staff through psycho-social services.”

Ndaba further called on communities, parents, and learners to work together in ensuring schools are safe and nurturing environments. “If anyone is struggling with bullying or any related issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. We are here to support you.”

Free State MEC for Education, Dr. Mantlhake Julia Maboya, extended her condolences to the grieving family.

“We are deeply heartbroken by the untimely loss of one of our learners,” she said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mbali’s family, friends, and school community during this incredibly painful time.”

The department has pledged continued intervention and support at Vulindlela Primary School and has urged stakeholders to help build safer learning spaces for all students.
