Kensington Palace has confirmed that Prince William, the Prince of Wales, will attend the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday, representing King Charles. The 42-year-old heir to the British throne will join world leaders and royals from across the globe for the service in Vatican City.
This decision aligns with modern royal tradition and marks a significant moment in William’s role as a future monarch and statesman.
King Charles, when he was the Prince of Wales, attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005, standing in for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who never attended the funeral of a pontiff.
As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the attendance of Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
A Sombre Loss for the King
Pope Francis passed away on Monday, 21 April, at the age of 88 following a stroke. His death came just 12 days after a deeply moving private meeting with King Charles and Queen Camilla during their state visit to Italy.
In a statement, King Charles expressed his “deep sadness” at the Pope’s passing, saying, “Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased… to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry.”
Charles went on to praise the Pope’s unwavering commitment to compassion, unity, and his belief in care for creation as an expression of faith.
He added, “His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church, and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith, and to those of goodwill who work for the benefit of others.”
Reflecting on their personal connection, Charles noted, “The Queen and I remember with particular affection our meetings with His Holiness over the years… We send our most heartfelt condolences and profound sympathy to the Church he served with such resolve and to the countless people around the world who, inspired by his life, will be mourning the devastating loss of this faithful follower of Jesus Christ.”
On Tuesday, the King wore a black tie as a mark of respect during a meeting with the Prime Minister of New Zealand at Windsor Castle.
