Trump’s frustration stemmed from Putin’s proposal to establish a “temporary administration” in Ukraine and to remove Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky as the nation’s negotiate a peace agreement.
In response to Trump’s comments on Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that some phrases used were paraphrased rather than direct quotes and acknowledged that “various statements” had been made.
Peskov reiterated that Moscow is focused on rebuilding its relations with Washington and working toward peace in Ukraine.
“We are actively engaging with the American side to restore our bilateral relations, which faced significant challenges under the previous administration,” Peskov told reporters during a regular conference call.
“We are also pursuing ideas related to finding a resolution in Ukraine. Efforts are ongoing, though there are currently no details to share.”
When asked about the potential for a call between the two leaders this week, Peskov said it is not yet on Putin’s schedule but could be arranged quickly if needed.
