Queen Mary of Denmark is set to travel abroad solo this weekend, as she represents the Danish monarchy at the funeral of Pope Francis in Vatican City on Saturday, April 26.
The Danish royal household confirmed the Queen’s attendance in a statement on their official website, noting: “On Saturday, 26 April 2025, Her Majesty the Queen will attend the Funeral Mass for His Holiness Pope Francis, which will take place in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City.”
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88 following complications from a stroke and heart failure. His death marks the end of a 12-year papacy that touched millions around the world.
In an official statement, the Vatican shared: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis… His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church.”
Queen Mary, 53, previously met Pope Francis in 2018 during an official visit to Italy with her husband, King Frederik. Her solo attendance at the funeral highlights her important role within the monarchy and among the global community of dignitaries paying their respects.
King Frederik, 56, will not be in attendance as he is currently on a three-day visit to Japan, where he is undertaking engagements focused on green energy and sustainable food production.
During his stay, he has met with Emperor Naruhito, attended innovation-focused conferences, and enjoyed a taste of local cuisine in Ginza. Following his Japan visit, he is scheduled to travel to Greenland to meet with the newly appointed government and visit Station Nord, a key military and scientific outpost.
In his absence, their son, Crown Prince Christian, is serving as regent.
The funeral will also be attended by a number of world leaders and royals, including the Prince of Wales, underscoring Pope Francis’s enduring global impact.
