Princess Ingrid Alexandra has been presented with a special gift to commemorate the end of her military service. The 21-year-old Norwegian royal has served with the Engineer Battalion at Skjold Camp in Målselv for the past 15 months.
To mark the completion of her service, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s daughter received a traditional Bardu and Målselv bunad—a folk costume—from the Målselv municipality. The Princess, dressed in her military uniform, was given the gift at a ceremony held at the municipal hall.
“A bunad symbolizes belonging, and I am happy to feel a sense of connection here after living in the area since January last year,” Princess Ingrid said during the presentation.
Norwegian media outlet Nye Troms reported that the bunad is valued at just over 50,000 kroner, equivalent to approximately £3,698. Traditionally, Norwegian royals wear such costumes during the country’s Constitution Day celebrations on May 17.
Princess Ingrid Alexandra serves as an engineer soldier and holds the rank of rifleman. In September 2024, the Norwegian Palace announced that she had extended her military service to a total of 15 months.

Ingrid Alexandra has not participated in many public events in recent years due to her military training. However, the palace has confirmed that she will take part in her first state visit when Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir travels to Norway from April 8 to 10.
She will join her parents, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, along with her grandparents, King Harald and Queen Sonja, in welcoming the President and her spouse to the country.
On the first day of the state visit, a white-tie gala dinner will take place at the Royal Palace in Oslo, marking another opportunity for Ingrid Alexandra to wear a tiara. She made her debut in the Boucheron Pearl Circle tiara during her 18th birthday celebration in 2022.
As second-in-line to the Norwegian throne, Ingrid Alexandra is poised to become Queen one day, making her the first female monarch of Norway since Queen Margaret, who ruled over Norway, Denmark, and Sweden from the late 1380s until her death in 1412.
