Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine and witness firsthand the devastation caused by Russian forces.
In an interview with CBS on Sunday, Zelenskyy appealed directly to Trump, saying, “Before making any decisions or engaging in negotiations, come and see the people, the civilians, the warriors, the hospitals, the churches, and the children—destroyed or dead.”
He urged Trump to witness the human toll of the war to fully understand what Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions have wrought.
This plea comes amid escalating violence, with reports indicating that Russian missile strikes on the Ukrainian city of Sumy killed at least 34 people and injured 83 others.
The attack occurred on Sunday morning, just as residents were attending Palm Sunday services. Two missiles struck the crowded city center, adding to the mounting civilian casualties.
The recent tragedy in Sumy could influence U.S. policy, with analysts suggesting that it may push the Trump administration to take a harder stance in peace talks with Russia. Trump has previously expressed interest in negotiating an end to the war by engaging directly with Moscow.
Meanwhile, the Turkish defense ministry announced that military representatives from Turkey and other nations would meet in Turkey this Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss Black Sea security in the event of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
