Authorities in Madrid have shut down a Chinese restaurant after a shocking discovery revealed it had been serving street pigeons in place of roast duck.
The restaurant, Jin Gu, located in the Usera district of the Spanish capital, was raided by local police on March 25. What they found was described as a public health nightmare.
Officers uncovered disturbing scenes, including gnarled strips of meat hanging from clothes horses, bowls of plucked and cooked street pigeons, and a bag filled with dirty, unidentified meat.
According to reports from Mail Online, eight rusted and malfunctioning freezers were filled with unlabelled and undated meats. The kitchen was infested with cockroaches and littered with rat traps, while cookware was found in a rusted and unhygienic state. There were also no thermometers on-site to ensure proper food storage temperatures.
To make matters worse, police discovered several prohibited items in the restaurant, including sea cucumbers—a marine species protected under strict regulations.
Perhaps most startling was a hidden storage room concealed behind a shelf in the restaurant’s accessible bathroom, a space not disclosed in the establishment’s business license.
In response to these severe health code violations, officials immediately ordered the restaurant to shut down. The owner is currently under investigation for alleged public health crimes.
