A retirement celebration turned tragic on April 9, 2025, when Mrs. Dupe Omowumi Bello, a newly retired headmistress, collapsed and died during her send-off ceremony in Osun State.
The incident occurred at the School for the Physically Challenged, Enu Odi, Ilesa, where friends, colleagues, and students had gathered to honor Mrs. Bello’s decades of devoted service to education. Known for her unwavering commitment and compassion, she had recently stepped down from her leadership role, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
According to eyewitnesses, the event began joyfully, with Mrs. Bello arriving in high spirits, dancing in a musical procession accompanied by drummers. “She was full of life, smiling and enjoying the moment. No one could have predicted what was about to happen,” said one attendee.
Tragically, shortly after taking her seat beside her husband at the high table, she began showing signs of distress. “She looked tired and seemed to struggle to breathe. People rushed to help immediately,” a source recounted.
First aid was administered on-site, and she was quickly taken to Ijesaland Geriatric Centre. From there, she was referred to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
The heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock, as tributes pour in for a woman remembered for her lifelong dedication to the well-being and education of her students.
