A landlord from Zengeza is wanted by police after allegedly orchestrating a fatal assault on his tenant during a dispute over missing rental funds.
The suspect, Crispen Marara, is accused of working with four unidentified accomplices to attack 38-year-old Tendai Nenguwo. Tendai succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, April 13, at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
The altercation is said to have stemmed from US$560 that Tendai had reportedly collected from other tenants at a property on Hanga Street in Zengeza 1, which belongs to Marara’s parents. He allegedly failed to hand over the money and instead used it for personal purposes.
“Police are investigating a murder case in Zengeza,” confirmed Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza. “The deceased was reported to have used the money of the accused person. The deceased passed on while admitted at Chitungwiza Central Hospital on April 13.”
According to reports, Marara enlisted four men to assist him in beating Tendai using broomsticks and fists. Tendai was later hospitalized, suffering from ongoing chest pains, which eventually led to his death.
Tendai’s sister, Yvette Masango, shared the family’s grief, noting that he had expressed hesitation about reporting the assault. “We lost a loving brother. He kept complaining of chest pains after the beating. He didn’t want to report it because he felt he was at fault. He was also evicted over unpaid rent,” she said.
Tendai leaves behind two children, the eldest currently in Grade 7. His burial is set to take place in Chihota village.
Police are urging anyone with information on Crispen Marara’s whereabouts or those of his accomplices to come forward.
