Kenya: 14-Year-Old Girl Dragged And Murdered By Lion

A 14-year-old girl has tragically lost her life after being attacked by a lion on a ranch near Nairobi, Kenya.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the lion leapt over a makeshift fence and entered a compound located just south of Nairobi National Park. The girl was with another teenager when the lion struck, seizing her and dragging her away.

The other teen quickly raised the alarm, prompting a search by KWS rangers. Following a trail of blood, they tracked the lion’s path to the Mbagathi River, where they found the girl’s body bearing injuries to her lower back.

The lion remains at large, and efforts are underway to locate and safely capture it. Rangers have set traps, and additional protective measures — such as electric fencing and AI-based early warning systems — are being introduced to enhance community safety.

Nairobi National Park, located just six miles from the city center, is home to a variety of wildlife including lions, buffalo, giraffes, leopards, and cheetahs. While fenced on three sides, the park remains open to the south to allow for wildlife migration — a factor that can sometimes bring animals into contact with nearby human populations.

The fatal lion attack occurred just a day after another deadly wildlife incident in Nyeri County, about 80 miles north of Nairobi. In that case, a 54-year-old man died after being attacked by an elephant, suffering severe chest trauma and multiple fractures, according to KWS.

Kenyan authorities continue to monitor both situations closely and are urging residents near wildlife zones to exercise caution.
