Actor Damon Wayans Sr. recently shared details about dating his nephew’s ex-girlfriend during an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast.
The 64-year-old actor, best known for his role in My Wife and Kids, confessed to former NFL star Shannon Sharpe that he unknowingly became romantically involved with the woman without realizing the family connection.
Wayans explained that he only discovered his nephew had previously dated the woman after developing what he described as a “love-at-first-sight” connection.
When Sharpe asked about the situation, Wayans admitted, “I was in love with her, that’s the thing,” before jokingly asking Sharpe, “Come on, you ain’t never did… you never did Jackson 5?”
Sharpe responded, “Hell no, I ain’t never did that. I mean, for a family member, that’s off-limits, Damon.”
Wayans defended himself, saying, “It wasn’t like they were in love,” and revealed that the relationship began in 2002, after his divorce from Lisa Thorner in 2000.
“I got divorced and I was by myself for two years,” he recalled. “Then I saw her and I was like, ‘Oh my God. I’m in love.’ And then I found out my nephew had dated her.”
Wayans mentioned that he spoke to his nephew about the situation, saying, “I’m like, you know, ‘What’s up?’ and he’s like, ‘That’s you.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, pass the Courvoisier, let’s go!'”
Though the situation was a bit awkward, especially at family gatherings, he said everything was fine and he ultimately fell in love with the woman.
Wayans chose not to reveal the woman’s identity, nor did he mention his nephew’s name.
