Actor Haley Joel Osment was arrested earlier this month at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California on charges of public intoxication and possible drug possession.
The incident occurred on April 8 after authorities were called to the resort around 2 p.m. to respond to reports of an allegedly intoxicated individual on the premises.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, ski patrol officers were already assisting Osment when law enforcement arrived. He was taken into custody and booked for public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. The substance in question has been sent to a lab for testing to determine its exact nature.
Osment was later released and is currently awaiting a decision from the Mono County District Attorney’s Office on whether formal charges will be filed.
Sources close to the 36-year-old actor say he has been dealing with intense personal challenges in recent months. He reportedly lost his home and belongings in the Altadena wildfire and has struggled with his insurance company, which recently denied his claim for a replacement residence.
This isn’t Osment’s first legal run-in related to substance use. In 2006, he was involved in a DUI crash in which he suffered injuries after his car hit a brick pillar. He later pleaded no contest to DUI and marijuana possession, receiving three years’ probation, mandatory rehab and AA meetings, and a $1,500 fine.
As of now, the Mono County District Attorney has not issued a public statement on whether the latest case will proceed to prosecution.
