The football world is in mourning following the sudden death of former Colombia international Jorge Bolano at the age of 47.

Bolano passed away on Sunday, April 6, in the city of Cucuta, Colombia, after suffering a heart attack while attending a relative’s birthday celebration. He was rushed to a nearby clinic but sadly succumbed to the medical emergency.

The Colombian Football Federation expressed their condolences in a statement, saying: “With deep sorrow, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones of Jorge Eladio Bolano Correa, former Colombian Men’s National Team player, professional footballer, and coach, who passed away this Sunday, April 6, in the city of Cucuta. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him. His legacy as a footballer and coach will remain in the memory of Colombian sport.”

Bolano earned 36 caps for Colombia and was part of the national squad at the 1998 World Cup.

However, much of his career was spent playing abroad, particularly in Italy. He enjoyed eight years at Parma, with two of those years spent on loan at Sampdoria and Lecce. During his time at Parma, he helped the club win the 2002 Coppa Italia, their most recent major title.

Gianluigi Buffon, his former teammate at Parma, remembered Bolano as an “unforgettable friend and teammate.”

Buffon reflected on their time together, saying, “Jorge was a constant in a locker room full of extraordinary champions. On the pitch, he fought relentlessly, and off the pitch, I fondly remember his kindness and humanity, which made him an example for everyone. We will always carry you with us, rest in peace, my friend.”

Parma also honored their former midfielder on social media, saying, “Today, the whole of Parma Calcio extends condolences to the family of Jorge Bolano, who has passed away at 47, leaving an irreplaceable void. Goodbye, Jorge. Forever Gialloblu.”
