Ebonyi State: Woman And 9-Month-Old Baby Die In Tragic Road Crash

A fatal road accident on Sunday, April 13, 2025, in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has claimed the lives of a woman and her nine-month-old baby.

The crash occurred at Uduma Junction in Uburu community when a bus carrying approximately 25 passengers, including several children, lost control while navigating a sharp bend at high speed. The vehicle reportedly collided with another car and somersaulted three times, leaving many severely injured.

Eyewitnesses said community members quickly rushed the victims to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), Uburu.

In a statement released Monday, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Agwụ Nwogo, confirmed that the passengers were returning to their base in Imo State after attending a burial in Okporike, Abakaliki.

He noted that emergency protocols were immediately activated upon the victims’ arrival. Sadly, two individuals—including the woman and her infant—were declared dead on arrival. The remaining 23 passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractured limbs, deep lacerations, crushed hands, and traumatic brain injuries.

“As of today, 18 patients, including the driver, are receiving intensive care in DUFUTH’s Accident and Emergency Unit, Surgical Ward, and ICU,” Nwogo said.

He also noted that four passengers with less severe injuries were treated and discharged.

An 11-month-old child remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, suffering from a traumatic brain injury. She is currently on artificial respiratory support due to complications with breathing.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise greater caution, especially on hazardous road sections like Uduma Junction, to prevent further tragedies.
