Adijat Adebayo, a deaf animator and passionate advocate, has made history by becoming the first woman with a disability to be crowned Miss Humanity at the 10th edition of the Exquisite Queen Nigeria World beauty pageant.
In a statement issued by the organisers, Light Work Media House Limited, Adebayo was celebrated not only as the first deaf contestant in the pageant’s history, but also for her inspiring advocacy and resilience.
“This milestone marks a significant stride towards inclusivity and diversity in the pageant world,” the statement read. “It reinforces the principle that inclusion is not charity, but a fundamental human right essential for a just, equitable, and thriving society.”
Competing alongside 13 other contestants, Adebayo stood out for her passion, dedication, and groundbreaking project—DEAFign Animation Academy. The initiative, which aims to empower deaf teenagers with animation skills and produce accessible educational materials, earned her the Best Advocacy Award, receiving widespread acclaim from judges and the audience.
Reflecting on her achievement, Adebayo shared, “I am thrilled to have been part of this journey and to have had the opportunity to showcase my abilities and passion. This is not just a personal victory—it’s proof that with determination, we can overcome any limitation. It also sends a powerful message that diversity enhances, rather than detracts from, the pageant experience.”
Her win is being hailed as a beacon of hope and representation for people with disabilities, especially in industries where they are often underrepresented.
