The passing of Pope Francis at age 88 on Easter Monday has prompted an outpouring of tributes from global leaders, royals, and religious figures alike. The Vatican has announced that his funeral will take place on Saturday, 26 April at 10 a.m. local time, in St Peter’s Basilica, following a period of public mourning.
The Pope’s body is currently lying in repose at Casa Santa Marta, his private residence, but will be transferred to St Peter’s on Wednesday to allow the public to pay their respects.
While the official guest list has yet to be released, a number of prominent figures and dignitaries have already confirmed their attendance.
Prince William
Representing the British Royal Family, Prince William will attend the funeral on behalf of King Charles, who previously led the UK delegation at the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005.
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium
The Belgian royals were among the first to confirm their attendance. In a public statement, they expressed “great sadness” at the Pope’s passing.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain
Spain’s royal couple will also be present. They paid tribute to the late pontiff by signing a book of condolences on Tuesday.
Donald and Melania Trump
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced via his Truth Social platform that he and Melania Trump would attend: “Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there!”
President Emmanuel Macron
The French President confirmed to local reporters that he would attend the service, saying: “We will attend the Pope’s funeral as we should.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer
A spokesperson from Downing Street confirmed that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also be present at the service on Saturday.
President Javier Milei of Argentina
Despite past criticism of the pontiff, Argentine President Javier Milei has confirmed his attendance. The late Pope was born in Buenos Aires and maintained a deep connection with his homeland.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The Ukrainian President is also expected to be present. He met Pope Francis several times throughout his leadership and shared a close rapport with the Vatican.
Ursula von der Leyen & Antonio Costa
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa will attend on behalf of the European Union.
President Sergio Mattarella & Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
Italy’s head of state and prime minister, who recently welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla to Rome, will both be in attendance, representing the Pope’s homeland.
As preparations for the funeral continue, tributes are still pouring in for the beloved spiritual leader whose influence extended far beyond the Catholic Church. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of mourners from around the globe.
