Plateau United has confirmed that its forward, Vincent Temitope, was hospitalised after being stabbed in the neck by an irate fan following their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash with Nasarawa United at the Lafia City Stadium.
According to a statement from Yaksat Maklek, the club’s Director of Media Operations, the incident occurred shortly after Plateau United’s 3-2 defeat on Sunday, April 13. Temitope, who was one of the goal scorers in the match, was reportedly approached by several fans pretending to take photos with him. During the interaction, one of the individuals suddenly launched an attack.
“After the game, a couple of fans came close to him under the pretense of taking snapshots, and one of them struck him in the neck,” Maklek stated.
“He was attacked with a knife. It’s frightening to imagine how much worse the situation could have been if he hadn’t managed to escape.”
Temitope was immediately rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia, where he received medical attention. He is now reported to be in stable condition.
Maklek also mentioned that the club has collected all necessary evidence and intends to present it to the NPFL for a full investigation and possible disciplinary action.
Temitope joined Plateau United last year and was recently called up to the Super Eagles B training squad ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
