Marvin Sapp, the renowned gospel singer and pastor, is facing criticism after a viral video captured him urging his congregation to raise $40,000 during a church service.
The footage shows Sapp instructing ushers to lock the church doors, preventing attendees from leaving, as he pressed members to contribute.
During his appeal, Sapp noted that approximately 1,000 people were in attendance, with another 1,000 watching online, and expressed confidence that together they could reach the $40,000 goal.
“This is a small seed,” he told the congregation, encouraging them to donate.
He then challenged those present to give $20 each, explaining that if every attendee—both in-person and online—contributed, the target would be met easily. He downplayed the amount, saying $20 was not a significant sum, recalling that he used to spend that much on dates with his late wife.
For those seated closer to the stage, he requested a $100 donation, adding, “Because, again, it costs to sit up here.”
The video has since sparked widespread backlash, with many criticizing Sapp’s approach.
