Students from various tertiary institutions in Ondo State took to the streets today, March 27, to protest the increasing cases of kidnappings and other criminal activities in the state.
Led by the NANS South West Chairman, Oluwarotimi Joshua, the demonstrators blocked major roads in Akure, the state capital, disrupting traffic as they demanded urgent action from the government and security agencies. Holding placards with bold messages, the students voiced their frustration over the state’s worsening security situation.
The protesters accused the government of neglecting its duty to protect lives and property, claiming that authorities have only paid lip service to their concerns.
Despite multiple engagements and peaceful discussions, they lamented the government’s failure to address their demands.
In addition to security concerns, the students also protested the poor conditions of tertiary institutions, the lack of student-friendly policies, and the risks faced by students participating in the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
Efforts by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, to disperse the protesters and clear the roads were met with resistance, as the students stood their ground, insisting on immediate action.
