US President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s full-scale invasion might ultimately fail, even if the United States continues its military support.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Trump was asked about his controversial decision to halt aid to Kyiv as it fights Russian forces.
During the discussion, he was reminded of a warning from Polish President Andrzej Duda, who stated that Ukraine “will not survive” without American support. When asked whether he was comfortable with that possibility, Trump responded, “Well, it may not survive anyway.
“But we have some weaknesses with Russia. You know, it takes two,” he added, without elaborating.
His comments come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares for a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday, while Ukrainian military and diplomatic representatives will hold talks with a US delegation on Tuesday.
Trump’s remarks further highlight the growing strain in US-Ukraine relations. The United States and the European Union have been Kyiv’s primary backers throughout Russia’s three-year invasion, but tensions have escalated following a contentious meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House on February 28.
After that meeting, the US president ordered a pause in military aid and intelligence sharing, reportedly in an effort to pressure Zelenskyy into negotiating a ceasefire with Russia.
According to sources, Trump has told aides that securing minerals deal between the US and Ukraine will not be enough to resume assistance. While he supports the deal, he also wants to see a shift in Zelenskyy’s stance toward peace talks before aid is reinstated.
