Meghan Markle has largely kept her children, five-year-old Prince Archie and three-year-old Princess Lilibet, out of the spotlight. However, with the launch of With Love, Meghan, that has started to change.
Alongside the new Netflix series, Meghan has also returned to Instagram, sharing glimpses of Archie and Lilibet. In a recent interview with Drew Barrymore, she opened up about their life in California—including an unexpected detail about their accents.
During her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday, March 6, Meghan was asked what traits in her children remind her of her husband, Prince Harry.
“Some of the words that they still say with a British accent—so they’ll say z-e-b-r-a,” Meghan explained, pronouncing it with the British “zed” sound.
She continued, “They have these little moments where it comes out. They have very American accents, but they’ll say words just like him, and I think it’s adorable. Zebra is a good one.”
The Netflix series, which premiered on Tuesday, March 4, also touched on Meghan’s surname. In the second episode, when Mindy Kaling referred to her as Meghan Markle, the Duchess gently corrected her, expressing pride in her married name.
“You keep saying Meghan Markle—you know, I’m Sussex now,” she shared. “When you have kids, you realize, ‘Now I share my name with my children.’ I didn’t know how meaningful that would be, but it means so much. It’s our little family name.”
While the royal family does not traditionally use surnames, Archie was originally registered as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor at birth, as he had not been granted a title. The surname Mountbatten-Windsor is used by male-line descendants of Queen Elizabeth II who do not hold royal styles or titles, which is why Prince Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise, also carries the name.
However, when King Charles III ascended the throne in 2022, Archie and Lilibet—now the children of a son of a sovereign—became entitled to use Prince and Princess titles. They now go by Sussex, much like how Prince William and Princess Kate’s children are known as George, Charlotte, and Louis Wales.
