Prince Robert of Luxembourg has announced the devastating loss of his youngest son, Frederik of Nassau, who tragically passed away at the age of 22.
In an emotional statement shared on the official website of the POLG Foundation, Prince Robert, a first cousin of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, shared the sorrowful news.
He revealed that Frederik, who was born with POLG mitochondrial disease, died a week ago on March 1, surrounded by his loving family.
In the letter, which he shared on behalf of himself and his wife, Julie Elizabeth Houston Ongaro, Prince Robert recounted a touching moment: “Frederik’s last question to me, prior to his other remarks was: ‘Papa, are you proud of me?’ He had barely been able to speak for several days, so the clarity of these words was as surprising as the gravity of the moment was profound.”
The Prince affirmed his pride, emphasizing that Frederik needed reassurance in knowing he had made a meaningful impact during his short and beautiful life. He praised his son’s “remarkable ability for positivity, joy, and determination,” and shared more about Frederik’s diagnosis at the age of 14.
“This was the battle Frederik fought, and the burden he carried throughout his life. He did so with grace and humor. When we asked if he wanted to create a foundation to find a cure and assist others like him, he eagerly embraced the opportunity,” he revealed.
Accompanying the heartfelt statement were a collection of cherished family photographs spanning the years, including images of Frederik with his brother Alexander, sister Charlotte, and his beloved dog, Mushu. His interests were also highlighted, showcasing his passions for music, film, gastronomy, nature, and fossils.
The family further shared details about Frederik’s early life, explaining that he was born in Aix-en-Provence and spent his first two years in London before relocating to Geneva, Switzerland. He attended the International School in Geneva before moving on to Ecole Eden and eventually St. George’s School in Clarens.
