King Frederik and Queen Mary captivated guests as they hosted a dazzling evening ball at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen on Friday.
Dressed to impress, the Danish monarch, 56, looked dapper in a classic tuxedo, while Queen Mary, 53, stunned in a shimmering pink Jenny Packham gown, accessorized with the diamond Edwardian tiara. However, it wasn’t just their elegant attire that caught everyone’s attention.
The royal couple took to the dance floor, showcasing their skills in the traditional Les Lanciers square dance alongside their guests. As explained by the Danish palace, Les Lanciers dates back to the 1800s and gained particular popularity in Copenhagen during the 1860s. Ballet dancer and Royal Theatre ballet master August Bournonville played a significant role in its spread by teaching the dance.
While Les Lanciers is taught in most Danish high schools, Australian-born Mary likely had to master the intricate steps before marrying then-Crown Prince Frederik in 2004. One royal fan acknowledged the effort, commenting: “My goodness, Mary has had to learn so much. That kind of dancing is not something we would ever do growing up in Australia.”
Adding a touch of humor to the evening, Queen Mary was seen playfully wiping her brow in relief after completing the dance. The lighthearted moment resonated with many. “I LOVE that Mary, like the rest of us, finds Les Lanciers a challenge!
