Operatives from the Gombe State Police Command successfully rescued a 27-year-old man who attempted to take his own life by climbing a telecommunications mast.
According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the man, identified as Mohammed Bello, alleged that he was being pursued by security agencies due to outstanding debts.
“On March 8, 2025, we received a distress call at the Gombe State Police Command’s Control Room regarding an unidentified individual who had scaled an MTN mast on Maimala Buni Street, Gombe LGA, and was refusing to come down,” the statement noted.
Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Pantami Division promptly dispatched officers to the scene.
Upon arrival, Bello expressed that he felt hunted by security forces over debts owed to two creditors, which he had been unable to pay, and he conveyed a desire to end his life rather than confront the situation.
The individual was later identified as Mohammed Bello, a resident of Jekadafari Quarters in Gombe.
During the rescue operation, Katukan Gombe, a respected community leader, successfully persuaded Bello to climb down, assuring him that arrangements would be made to settle his debts.
With this reassured promise, he agreed to safely descend from the mast.
Bello was subsequently taken into police custody, where his statement was recorded under caution.
The Gombe State Police Command praised the quick response of their officers and the involvement of community leaders in resolving the crisis peacefully.
The Command also encourages the public to seek lawful and constructive solutions to financial difficulties, reminding individuals that assistance is always available.
