A woman, Promise Israel, has shared her experience of being refused a spot in a church choir by a pastor’s wife because she was in a homos*xual relationship at the time.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Promise recalled how the rejection initially angered her and led her to leave the church. However, looking back, she now believes that moment ultimately changed her life and led her away from the lesbian lifestyle.
Her Experience
“I remember a few years ago, I joined a church and opened up to the pastor and his wife about being in a homos*xual relationship,” she wrote.
“I kept attending, and when I wanted to sing in the choir, the pastor’s wife told me I needed to get myself together first. That completely offended me—or rather, the ‘gay spirit’ inside me was offended—so I left the church in anger and stayed in that lifestyle even longer.”
Promise now sees that denial as a blessing in disguise, believing that had she been allowed to participate, she might have never left that way of life.
“She actually saved my life. If I had been given the chance to be involved in church while still in that lifestyle, I never would’ve left. I would’ve been able to ‘have my cake and eat it too.’”
Her Takeaway
She emphasized that sometimes saying “no” is necessary for change.
“Stop allowing people to do things out of order. Having boundaries in Christ is not judgment—it’s truth. I was provoked to change, and now I’m free, growing with Jesus Christ every day.”
