European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for Europe to urgently rearm, urging governments to allow member states to significantly boost defense spending.

Speaking on Sunday, March 2, following a meeting in London on support for Ukraine, von der Leyen stressed the need for Europe to demonstrate its commitment to defending democracy, particularly in light of recent tensions between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“After years of underinvestment, it is now crucial to increase defense spending over a sustained period,” she stated.

Von der Leyen also emphasized the importance of providing member states with greater fiscal flexibility to facilitate the necessary surge in military funding.
