Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, has alleged that a significant cyberattack targeting his social media platform, X, originated from Ukraine.
This assertion follows a series of glitches that the platform experienced on Monday, March 10.
“We’re not exactly sure what happened,” Musk stated during an interview with Fox Business Network on Monday afternoon. “But there was a massive cyberattack aimed at bringing down the X system, with IP addresses traced back to the Ukraine area.”
Earlier in the day, Musk had confirmed that X was indeed under a “massive cyberattack,” though he noted that the site was back up and operational by the time of the interview.
Users around the globe reported issues with the app and website as early as 5:30 AM ET, leading to widespread frustration.
Musk emphasized that the scale of resources involved in the hack suggested it was the work of a “coordinated group” or a foreign nation. He did not elaborate further on the attack, which reportedly affected the app’s 600 million active monthly users.
His comments come amid strained relations between Kyiv and Washington. Last month, former President Donald Trump referred to Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelensky as a “dictator,” accusing him of warmongering and expressing a lack of gratitude for U.S. military support.
Trump’s remarks sparked backlash in Ukraine, especially after a proposed minerals deal between Washington and Kyiv was left unsigned after Zelensky was expelled from the White House.
Following the incident, Musk labeled Zelensky as “evil,” accusing him of perpetuating a “forever war” with Russia. “Zelensky wants a never-ending graft meat grinder. This is evil,” Musk stated at that time.
In a prior October tweet, he called for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, warning that “we are sleepwalking our way into World War III with one foolish decision after the other.”
On the same day as Musk’s comments, President Zelensky was in Saudi Arabia for discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Talks are scheduled for Tuesday between Ukrainian and U.S. officials, with the aim of making significant progress toward resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia.
