Ben Affleck Reflects On ‘Embarrassing’ Divorce From Jennifer Lopez

Ben Affleck has opened up about his “embarrassing” divorce from Jennifer Lopez in a rare candid statement. The actor and filmmaker, who was famously engaged to the singer-actress in the early 2000s, saw their relationship rekindle nearly two decades later, only to end in divorce earlier this year after two years of marriage.

In a recent cover interview for GQ’s April 2025 issue, the 52-year-old Affleck shared that there was “no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue” surrounding their breakup.

“The reality is, when you hear people asking, ‘What happened?’ the truth is, there’s not a single answer,” he explained. “It’s just a story about people trying to navigate their lives and relationships, much like we all do.”

Affleck noted that as he has aged, he realizes that relationships don’t boil down to dramatic events. Instead, he described them as resembling “couple’s therapy sessions,” which often become tedious over time.

“There comes a point where you start to see that someone clearly has issues. I hesitate to share these things because it feels embarrassing and vulnerable,” he admitted.

The actor also discussed his decision to participate in the 2024 documentary about their marriage, titled The Greatest Love Story Never Told. He expressed that he wanted to contribute in a way that felt honest and compelling, as he saw it as an intriguing exploration.

Affleck praised Lopez, 55, for her ability to handle fame more adeptly than he has, saying, “My temperament leans toward being more reserved and private than hers.”

He emphasized that the documentary “wasn’t the cause of some major fracture” in their relationship, clarifying, “You can’t watch that documentary and pinpoint the issues we had.”

While he acknowledges the public’s curiosity about their differing perspectives on balancing public and private life, Affleck maintains “nothing but respect” for his ex-wife.

“There’s a tendency to want to find root causes for breakups,” he reflected. “But honestly, the truth is much simpler than people might believe or find interesting.”
