A tragic fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri students.
The fire reportedly broke out late Tuesday night, February 4, 2025, and raged for approximately three hours, leaving 16 others injured.
According to a local resident, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, the fire was believed to have been caused by stored sticks, locally known as kara.
“It happened at Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside their study hall. About 100 students were in the building. After evacuating the students, they thought no one was left inside. It was only after the fire was extinguished that they discovered the remains—burnt beyond recognition,” he told Channels Television.
The deceased students were laid to rest on Wednesday.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Comrade Mannir Muazu Haidara, stated that he was on his way to the scene and would provide more details later.
