A Harare woman has taken legal action against her husband, accusing him of subjecting her to distressing and harmful practices during their intimate encounters.
During a hearing at the Harare Civil Court, Joyce Garikayi sought a protection order against her husband, Jack Mukandwe, alleging that his use of chilli during sex had caused her severe health issues.
“My private parts are constantly itching and reacting because of the chilli my husband insists on using, claiming it enhances our intimacy. When I refuse, he insults me, saying my father’s goblins are the ones sleeping with me,” Joyce told the court.
Surprisingly, Jack did not deny the allegations. Instead, he admitted to trying the practice after hearing about it from friends who claimed it improved their relationships.
In addition to this, Joyce accused Jack of both physical and emotional abuse. She stated that he frequently beat her with an electricity cable, hurled insults at her in front of their children, and engaged in erratic behavior, such as removing asbestos from their roof when angered. Fearing for her safety, she moved back to her parents’ home, but she claimed Jack continued to stalk and harass her.
Jack, in response, apologized for his violent actions, attributing them to his short temper. While he expressed a desire to reconcile, Joyce remained firm, prioritizing her safety.
Magistrate Meenal Naratom granted Joyce a protection order, acknowledging the emotional and physical abuse she had endured and ensuring legal protection from further harm.
