A 42-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Augustine, has been arrested for allegedly killing his 48-year-old Spanish wife, Catalina, and setting their family home on fire in Benalmádena, a town in Costa del Sol, Spain.

The tragic incident occurred around 5:25 a.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2025. The couple shared three children—all minors—while the victim also had an older son from a previous relationship.

Authorities revealed that Augustine was the one who initially called the 112 Andalucía emergency service to report the fire but did not disclose that the burning property was his home.

Local police officers arrived swiftly at the scene and managed to rescue the children. After extinguishing the flames, they discovered Catalina’s body inside the house with visible signs of violence. Augustine was arrested at the scene as the primary suspect in her death. Reports also indicate that he had allegedly assaulted the children.

The couple had been together for approximately 13 years before recently separating. Their children include an 11-year-old son and two younger daughters. Catalina’s mother lived on the upper floor of the property, while the victim and her children resided on the ground floor.
