The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting police officers from carrying assault weapons while dressed in civilian attire.
He also cautioned officers against human rights violations, stressing the Force’s responsibility to uphold and protect these rights.
Speaking during a virtual meeting with senior police officials on February 10, Egbetokun addressed numerous complaints received through the Force’s complaint channels regarding human rights abuses.
A statement from Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, highlighted that the meeting aimed to reinforce professionalism and improve operational standards within the Nigeria Police Force.
“The IGP emphasized that any act violating human rights will not be tolerated and will attract severe consequences,” the statement read.
He further warned tactical squads against abusing their authority and dressing inappropriately, insisting that officers must operate in their designated uniforms.
“No officer should be seen carrying rifles while dressed in civilian clothing,” he stated.
Additionally, the IGP condemned the unauthorized transfer of cases without his written approval, warning that such practices cause unnecessary delays and burden the parties involved.
He concluded by urging officers at all levels to uphold professionalism and avoid actions that could tarnish the reputation of the Force.
