Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip have revealed the name of their new daughter! The Swedish royal couple welcomed their fourth child on Friday, and King Carl XVI Gustaf officially announced her full name this week.
During a council meeting at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on Monday, the king shared the baby’s name, although he later issued an apology for mistakenly stating the first name.
The palace released a statement stating, “At the council meeting, His Majesty the King informed the government that the child, who is eighth in line to the throne, will be named Ines Marie Lilian Silvia, with the given name Ines. Princess Ines is granted the title of Duchess of Västerbotten.”
The announcement continued, “In accordance with the King’s decision of October 7, 2019, regarding changes in the Royal House, Princess Ines is a member of the Royal Family. However, she will not be part of the Royal House, and therefore she does not hold the title of Royal Highness.”
According to The Bump, the name Ines has Spanish origins and is linked to the Greek name Agnes, meaning “pure” or “holy.” Her middle names, Silvia and Maria, are heartfelt tributes to Prince Carl Philip’s mother, Queen Silvia, and Princess Sofia’s mother, Marie Hellqvist. The name Lilian honors Carl Philip’s great-aunt, Princess Lilian of Sweden, Duchess of Halland, who passed away in 2013.
Princess Ines’s ducal title, Duchess of Västerbotten, was previously held by King Carl’s mother, Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who died in 1972.
The new princess made her entrance at 1:10 PM on February 7 at Danderyd Hospital, with the palace announcing the joyous news just two hours later. Over the weekend, the delighted parents were spotted leaving the hospital with their newborn daughter.
Prince Carl Philip, carrying his daughter in a light pink car seat, expressed their happiness to the media, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome our newborn daughter. The big brothers are excited to get to know their new little sister.” The couple also has three sons: Prince Alexander (eight), Prince Gabriel (seven), and Prince Julian (three).
