Queen Camilla had an unexpected victory on Tuesday when she took part in a Formula 1-style race during a visit to an East London school.
The 77-year-old royal was at Mulberry Academy London Dock to officially open the new school, receiving a warm welcome from excited students.
After touring the science labs and admiring Bunsen burners, Camilla got hands-on with a special program run in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix. She observed how students learn to build and race robotic cars on a track stretching across several tables.
Not one to miss out on the fun, the Queen joined in, racing against 11-year-old Mahiri—and narrowly claiming victory. Laughing after her win, she said, “I can’t believe I beat you. You were being very kind.”
Following her thrilling race, Camilla was presented with a cake, which she cheerfully noted she would enjoy “for her tea.” The visit also featured a lively performance of My Shot from Hamilton by a group of boys.
Clearly impressed, Camilla applauded, saying, “Brilliant. You had my toes tapping and my hands clapping,” as she shook hands with the young performers.
The excitement didn’t stop there—Camilla also witnessed a spectacular fireworks display, showcasing the school’s pyrotechnic skills.
To mark the official opening of the academy, the Queen cut a purple ribbon and gave an impromptu speech, warmly telling the crowd: “Thank you very much for having me—and for letting me win the car race.”
