A tragic fire in Gyinyaase, a suburb of the Asokwa Municipality in Ghana’s Ashanti region, claimed the lives of a family of four.

Linda Agyemang, a 33-year-old nurse at Kumasi South Hospital, and her three children, aged between 7 and 14, were trapped in their bedroom apartment when the blaze broke out early on Saturday, February 8, 2025.

The fire engulfed their home, destroying it and damaging other personal property, while other tenants narrowly escaped the flames.

“My wife woke me up around 3:30 am to tell me about the fire. I rushed to the scene and heard the children screaming for help,” recounted a co-tenant, Owusu George. “While trying to break down the door, there was a sudden explosion from the kitchen area.”

“I suspect it was a gas cylinder. Another resident joined me to attempt to break the window and rescue the children, but we were unable to get through,” he added.

Firefighters arrived about 10 minutes after the distress call was made at 4:30 am and quickly extinguished the fire. Unfortunately, they found the victims in the bathroom, burned beyond recognition.

The charred remains have been taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue, where they await autopsy.

The fire service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.
