A newborn baby was discovered dead in a carton near a drainage in the Tudun Tagarji community, Kaura area of Kano State. The tragic discovery was made on Saturday, February 15.
Commander Rabiu Sulaiman, leader of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group, revealed the discovery in a statement on Sunday, February 16. He explained that his team came across the disturbing scene during a routine patrol around 2 a.m.
“Yesterday, around 2 a.m., during our patrol, we encountered a shocking sight inside a pit nearby. At first, we noticed a discarded carton, but we weren’t sure what was inside. To confirm, I instructed my team to open the carton, and to our horror, we found a lifeless baby,” Sulaiman said.
After the discovery, the vigilantes alerted local leaders and reported the incident to the police.
“By morning, we invited the ward head and other community members to witness the situation before taking the baby to the police station,” Sulaiman continued.
The police directed the group to a hospital, where doctors confirmed the baby’s death.
“We then returned home and organized burial rites for the baby in accordance with Islamic customs,” Sulaiman added.
The commander urged vigilance in safeguarding communities and advised parents to guide their children, especially young women, to prevent unwanted pregnancies. “Unwanted pregnancies contradict Islamic teachings. Parents must keep a close watch on their children’s activities and provide proper guidance,” he stressed.
