A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna has sentenced 36-year-old driver Mustapha Aminu to 15 strokes of the cane for assaulting a police officer on duty.
Aminu, who resides in Ungwan Sanusi, Kaduna, pleaded guilty to hitting Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a log of wood.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel stated that the punishment was meant to emphasize the severity of Aminu’s actions and deter others from similar behavior.
“This will also serve as a warning to others who may consider committing such crimes. I hereby order a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” he ruled. He also advised Aminu to focus on his work and become a responsible member of society.
Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Chidi Leo explained that Aminu had been driving recklessly and attacked the officer when stopped. The incident occurred on January 29 at around 2 p.m.
The offence violated Section 237 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
