Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to “open the gates of hell” in Gaza if Hamas does not release all hostages, emphasizing a coordinated strategy with the United States against the Palestinian militant group.
Speaking alongside visiting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday, February 16, Netanyahu stated that while specific details of their plan could not be publicly disclosed, Israel would take decisive action if the hostages were not freed.
“We will eliminate Hamas’s military capability and its political rule in Gaza,” Netanyahu declared. “We will bring all our hostages home, and we will ensure that Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel.”
Netanyahu praised the United States’ strong support, which he said would expedite Israel’s efforts. He also mentioned discussions with Rubio about U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial vision for Gaza’s future.
Trump had proposed transforming Gaza into a luxury destination, the “Riviera of the Middle East,” while relocating its two million Palestinian residents to other countries, including Egypt and Jordan. The plan has faced widespread global criticism.
Rubio acknowledged the controversy surrounding Trump’s proposal but defended it as bold and necessary. He emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Gaza must be resolved and reiterated the need to eliminate Hamas as a political and military force.
“The first priority for Trump is ensuring the hostages held in Gaza since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack are brought home,” Rubio added.
