A partially severed hand belonging to a 12-year-old boy was dropped from the sky by a bird into a primary school playground.

The gruesome discovery was made outside Our Lady Immaculate School in Darndale, north Dublin on Friday.

Officers believe the body part was blown off as children played with a gas canister in the local area on Thursday night.

Following the explosion, a child showed up to Mater Hospital with most of his hand missing following the explosion. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A bird is then thought to have picked it up. The school was closed at the time it was found.

The severely damaged hand was discovered early on Friday afternoon, prompting concern it related to a murder victim.

Some of the remains of murdered gangland victim Keane Mulready Wood were discovered near the area in 2020.

But police are confident the remains belonged to the child, who presented at hospital with a partially severed hand.

The remains are due to undergo DNA testing to confirm their identity. The state pathologist has also been notified.
