Irish boxer John Cooney is in critical condition in intensive care following a severe brain injury sustained during his title clash with Welshman Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall over the weekend.
Cooney was stopped in the ninth round of Saturday’s bout and was rushed to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
In a statement, Cooney’s promoter Mark Dunlop said, “After John Cooney’s intense title fight at Ulster Hall on Saturday evening, he was assessed by the British Boxing Board of Control’s onsite medical team and immediately transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital for further treatment.
“Upon arrival, doctors discovered he had suffered an intracranial hemorrhage, prompting urgent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. John is currently in the ICU, receiving expert care from the hospital’s intensive care team.”
Cooney had claimed the title with a victory over Liam Gaynor in Dublin in November 2023 but had been sidelined for a year due to a hand injury. He made his comeback in October with a win against Tampela Maharusi.
Nathan Howells expressed his concern in a heartfelt message on social media, saying, “I’ve been waiting for updates myself, and here’s the latest from the promoter. I never intended for any of this to happen—I just went out there to box. I sincerely wish John and his family all the best and hope he recovers fully.
“Though I don’t know him personally, he seems like a respectful and kind man. He’s a strong, fit young fighter, and I believe he can overcome this. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and he will always have my respect.
“We shared the ring, and he never gave up or looked for an easy way out. Get well soon, mate—all the best.”
