A newborn baby has tragically passed away after reportedly being thrown from a hotel room window in Paris by an 18-year-old American tourist, who is believed to be the child’s mother.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on February 24 at the Ibis Style hotel in the 20th arrondissement, on rue des Réglises, according to a witness report.
It is suspected that the young woman threw the infant from the second-floor window of her hotel room. Witnesses, who heard screams, quickly alerted authorities, prompting emergency services to rush to the scene. The baby was transported to Robert-Debré hospital in the 19th arrondissement but did not survive.
The woman believed to be the mother was also taken to the hospital. Reports indicate she was on a study trip to Paris with other American students.
Eyewitnesses claim the newborn was thrown from the window with the umbilical cord still attached.
Despite emergency responders’ best efforts, the infant succumbed to his injuries, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed to Le Parisien.
A magistrate from the Paris public prosecutor’s office, along with officers from the minor protection brigade (BPM) of the Paris judicial police, responded to the scene. Authorities have launched an investigation into the “homicide of a minor under 15.”
The prosecution stated that the young woman was part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe. She was taken to the hospital for surgery after recently giving birth and was also placed in custody. Investigators are considering the possibility of a denial of pregnancy.
A source close to the case told Paris Match: “The investigation is ongoing, and the precise circumstances of this tragedy are yet to be determined… It remains unclear whether this involves a case of pregnancy denial.”
