For Zara and Mike Tindall, starting the year in Australia has become a cherished tradition. The couple, who recently spent a week attending the Magic Millions equestrian and auction event on the Gold Coast, view the country where they first met 21 years ago as their “home away from home.”
In an exclusive interview with HELLO!, Zara shared what makes their annual trip Down Under so special. “We have always loved Australia; it truly feels like a home from home for us. Coming to Queensland at the start of the year has become a tradition. The Magic Millions carnival is bustling with activity, but being by the beach, surrounded by fellow horse enthusiasts, and celebrating all things equine is the perfect way to kick off the year,” she said.
Zara highlighted the joys of escaping the UK winter for Australia’s warm climate and stunning beaches. “We love leaving the cold behind and stepping into the warmth, with incredible water temperatures. The Gold Coast is amazing—it offers everything from beaches to horses and more.”
Mike, too, embraced the Australian spirit, taking part in a karaoke competition during Magic Millions Gold, the first evening race meeting. “Mike was a judge and even sang—he never misses a chance for karaoke,” Zara shared.
The couple enjoyed their time on the beach as well, with Zara participating in a relaxed horse race alongside fellow ambassadors, including Nacho Figueras and Delfina Blaquier. Mike, however, opted to stay on the sidelines. “I know my limits! Watching Zara and Nacho ride effortlessly along Surfers’ Paradise Beach is incredible. The best place for me is cheering them on,” the former rugby player admitted.
Although their children—Mia, 11, Lena, 6, and Lucas, 3—did not join them on this trip, Zara noted their shared fondness for the region. “The kids have spent time in Australia and absolutely love it. What’s not to enjoy about sun, surf, and a laid-back atmosphere?”
During their stay, Zara also found time to explore local shops and was praised for her vibrant fashion choices, showcasing designs by Rebecca Vallance and Leo Lin. “It’s such a treat to trade winter coats for summer dresses. The colorful and fun Australian styles inspire such a great vibe,” she said.
With their love for the country and its unique blend of beaches, equestrian events, and relaxed charm, it’s clear why Australia holds a special place in the Tindalls’ hearts.
