A woman has died and a toddler been left fighting for his life after a car ploughed into a tree.
Emergency services were raced to the M180 at Barnetby between junctions five and four around 11.15am on Sunday after reports of a smash.
Paramedics arrived to find a Mitsubishi Outlander had ploughed into a tree with three people inside.
A woman, 20, and two-year-old boy were raced to hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old man, only received minor injuries and was quickly arrested at the scene.
Despite the valiant efforts of emergency services, the woman passed away on Monday morning. The tot remains in a critical condition.
Immediately after the crash, the driver was arrested on suspicion of being over the prescribed limit, unfit through drink and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He has since been further arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody whilst officers conduct lines of enquiry.
