Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a UK prison and has returned to Nigeria, according to Vanguard. She arrived in Abuja on January 22.
In May 2023, Senator Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were sentenced by a UK court for their involvement in an organ harvesting case.
The trio was found guilty on March 23, 2023, of trafficking a Nigerian trader to the UK with the intent of harvesting his kidney, a violation of the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.
The jury determined that they conspired to exploit the 21-year-old for his organ, marking the first conviction of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act.
Ike Ekweremadu received a 10-year prison sentence, while Beatrice was sentenced to six years despite citing health concerns during the trial. Dr. Obinna Obeta, who assisted in the organ harvesting scheme, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.
