A Virginia pastor is facing backlash after a viral video showed him compelling a young woman to apologize publicly to his congregation for becoming pregnant outside of marriage.
Pastor Terry Jackson of True Vine Apostolic Church of Christ in Hampton, Virginia, was recorded during a Sunday service on January 5, instructing the woman to stand in the middle of the church and address the congregation.
In a trembling voice, the woman began, “I want to apologize to everybody in here because I am pregnant,” before breaking down in tears. She concluded her speech with, “I just hope that y’all forgive me,” and walked away with her head bowed.
Following her apology, Pastor Jackson addressed the congregation, reiterating that the church does not condone sin. He announced that there would be no baby shower for the woman due to her pregnancy out of wedlock.
The video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many questioning why the man involved in the pregnancy was not similarly held accountable or shamed.
