California experienced a 3.7 magnitude earthquake on Friday, January 10, as the state continued to battle deadly wildfires.
The quake struck near the San Francisco Bay area at approximately 7:02 AM PT. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a depth of 8.4 kilometers and occurred about three miles east of the San Francisco Zoo.
There have been no reports of damage or injuries at this time.
The seismic event took place roughly 350 miles from Los Angeles, where devastating wildfires have claimed at least 10 lives and displaced 180,000 residents.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed the situation, stating, “I promised to make the safety of San Franciscans my first priority as mayor, and I am keeping that promise today with this morning’s earthquake.”
He added, “I ordered city government into action immediately, and our first responders have been out across the city ensuring the safety of our residents.”
For several days, wildfires have been raging across Los Angeles County, destroying at least 10,000 homes and structures and resulting in significant loss of life.
